Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone.  I hope 2012 is a good year.
Courtesy of Google Images
2011 was a hard year and I have decided to do something I don't normally do and that is make New Year resolutions!  2012 will be the year the weight finally comes off and will be the year I get fitter - for too long I've talked and done very little action!  There will be no huge amounts of unpaid overtime at work.  Before Christmas I did 39 hours over 3 days - ridiculous - and boy have I suffered for it.

2012 will also be the year that I get my confidence and self-esteem back and I can stand up and be counted!!!
I hope you all have a wonderful New Year and am looking forward to reading all your blogs whether they be about miniatures, losing weight or life in general :)

Heading North today!

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas - ours was hectic and not relaxing at all but today we're off to Glasgow - spending Boxing Day with my family and can't wait - bit of a do at my Aunt's house.    I always smile when we cross over the Scottish/English Border - I don't know why I just do!!!!   The weather is certainly different to last year - sunny but very windy and no snow at all and it's quite 'warm' for this time of the year.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Sorry for doing this wonderful poem again by Clement Moore but it conjures up Christmas for me!
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Merry Christmas

Well Christmas is nearly here and I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and also to say hello to new followers who I fear I've neglected in welcoming you.  I hope you all have a magical time at Christmas.

Fountains Abbey at Christmas

We went to Fountains Abbey last Sunday where the Abbey ruins were floodlit in wonderful coloured lights.   It was a pretty dull miserable day but it still felt quite magical.  If you've never been to Fountains Abbey and get the chance to go, I would highly recommend a visit.  We had mulled wine but sadly had missed the carol concert.

Lake View and Mini Xmas Dinners!

The outside of Lake View is finished apart from the chimney which needs gluing on.  I am quite pleased with it now.  Mr C has very kindly put five new lights in for me and in the bedroom and top room we've put two temporary lights in just for Christmas.  He has also put my Christmas trees in.  I decided that 'the couple' have just moved in and are still celebrating Christmas even though there is a lot of work to be done.   All the furniture is from my original house and I won't be getting any new furniture until after Christmas (or maybe Xmas day!!).

I also purchased two of Mags Cassidy's Xmas Dinners and they are divine and she very kindly sent me the jar of sweets :)

Military Wives Choir - 'Wherever You Are'

Just had to share this link - the music is lovely and the words so meaningful.

Gareth Malone who is a British Choirmaster put together a Military Wives Choir (their husbands were all away serving in Afghanistan).  He had this piece of music composed by Paul Mealor an outstanding Welsh composer.  The words came from excerpts from letters and poems that were written between the Military Wives and their Husbands and one of the women had the words 'Wherever you are, my love will keep you safe' engraved on a bracelet her husband had given her.

They performed this song live at the Royal Albert Hall for the Festival of Remembrance.  The song is going to be released on 19 December 2011 with proceeds going to Royal British Legion and SSAFA.

Phew at last !

Finally the scales have gone down - whoo hoo I've managed to lose 3 lbs this week - this has been a long time coming since I put some weight back on when on holiday - that's really motivated me this week as not had a good week workwise but I was on cloud nine this morning when I got weighed :)

Wee Witchy Cottage

Thanks to Mr C I've managed to get Wee Witchy Cottage almost ready for Halloween.   He managed to get all the lights done for me and I took a very strong painkiller and finished the painting.  I'm really pleased with how it's turned out.  I do need curtains and bedding though (especially bedding!).  A garden will be added later and possibly a lean-to as well.

You will see the delightful mushrooms in a basket and books that Christine made - they are stunning!   I've got some of Kat's hats on display as well as some other items that she made.   There are also items from Nikki.  The two pumpkin lights were made by Ray Storey.  The cat, the candles on the fireplace, the timer and the hat at the back were from Mags  - when I saw the hat and broom I immediately thought that they would do nicely as a lamp stand and it's worked quite well :)  Amazing how we get these ideas!!

DeQuervains's update!

Just thought I would bore you all with a quick update.  I went to see a private physiotherapist who advised against the injection! He did say he would happily recommend an injection into the shoulder, elbow, hips, knees but the wrist is the most painful place to have it done!! He thoroughly examined my wrist and hand and explained all about Dequervains. He performed ultrasound treatment; however he is concerned that I may have a fracture or 'ripped' the tendon and has told me to get an x-ray (which won't show the tendon).  He also said that I should be resting the hand and wrist and certainly not working! I'm pretty sure when people tell you to rest they giggle behind your back - have they ever tried 'resting'??  I have a lot to do today and I am going to take some strong painkillers because I am determined to paint Wee Witchy Cottage today!

Red Light & tree for Lake View

I had ordered a nice red light ages ago for Lake View and it arrived when we were on holiday.  Mr C has photographed it for me this morning before rushing out to work.  It is going to go in the hall and I really like it:)  We went off to the Lakes the other weekend for a day and called into our favourite garden centre and I spotted this little Christmas tree in red! I do have two lit Christmas trees which will go into Lake View but couldn't resist this one and I don't normally do glittery stuff - and it was dirt cheap:)

De Quervain's Syndrome!

That's an intriguing title!  But I can tell you DeQuervains syndrome is very painful :( and I am feeling sorry for myself :(   I am having problems finishing the painting on my wee witchy cottage and also doing some work on Lake View and I so wanted part of the witchy cottage finished for Halloween but I will try my best and Mr C is going to try and get the electrics in for me this weekend :(

When I was diagnosed I was given a wrist splint, told to take 2 weeks off work (which I didn't because of the workload and job security), given pain relief & referred to the physio department.  Unfortunately I saw the same physio I had seen before who treated me for six months for a painful wrist and forearm  and missed the fact that I had fractured my wrist!

I was told I required a steroid injection into the tendon sheath................AARRGGH - have a needle phobia :(  Just because I work in a hospital doesn't mean to say I like needles!)  and was told the physio doing the injections had a 'bit of a waiting list'!  I really don't want this done at all :(

Sorry for the longwinded post but feeling sorry for myself today.  I have been given some stronger pain relief from the doctors and hopefully can do some miniature work once they kick in:)

Smartphone at last :)

I finally upgraded my mobile phone to a smartphone.  I got the Samsung Galaxy W (brand new on the market).  I really liked Mr C's Samsung Galaxy SII but it was too big for my little hands so I got this one and I love it :)   I couldn't believe that Mr C had changed his iphone for an androidy thing but he really likes it!!!

I am hoping that somehow it will help get my life organised !!!!!  The only thing I am unhappy about at the moment is that there is no Weightwatchers app for the android market - it is coming soon.

Mini Belfast Sink & Big Dinner!!!

Popped into Dolls House Emporium yesterday at Carlisle on the way to Glasgow but was a little bit disappointed - they didn't have everything in that I wanted to look at.  The only thing I bought was a Belfast sink which I am going to grunge up for the Wee Witchy Cottage - will post photos later.

Had a great day with the family yesterday - lots to eat and drink and there was non-stop chatter:)  My Aunt does the best ever roast potatoes - yum!   My cousin had got out some old photos which were really interesting - I do love looking at old photos :)

On Holiday at Last :)

Well we finally  made it - the start of our holiday although Mr C is at work today and finishes tonight!   For the last two weeks I have gone to work early, worked my lunch and stayed back each evening and everytime I promise myself no more!!!  Well there it is - I've written it down so hopefully I will commit to that statement.

Off on Sunday to my aunt's for dinner with some of the family - can't wait. There will be lots of great food, drink and lots of chat :)   Haven't seen some of them for ages.  Then off to Aviemore - whoo, hoo - cannot wait and from there to see Eilean Donan Castle (my favourite place) and Plockton

Sorry to bore you all but I am so excited and just hope the pain and stress goes in the next couple of days.

Revamping Witchy Potion Jars

Today I fully intended doing some more painting, etc on my Wee Witchy Cottage but got sidetracked revamping some potion jars - as you do :)  I had bought these little jars ages ago but really didn't like the labels (but they were a good price!)

Anyway this afternoon decided to stain some parchment paper with a mix of tea and coffee, then dry it in the oven.   Typed all my labels up and prayed that the paper would go through our new printer with no problems.  Phew - it worked :)

I am quite happy with them although I think some of them could have been a bit smaller.

Decisions !

I have just shocked my husband today because I told him that I was thinking of selling my original dolls house - Holly House!  There are various reasons for this decision - one  being I love Lake View (I have to say I also love Holly House!) and really want to  be able to do up Lake View.  I was even thinking about selling Lake View a while ago and one of the reasons for this was that Holly House takes up all the room!!  I find the size of Lake View more manageable and also my tastes have changed somewhat over the years too.  Also our plan is to downsize in a year or two so Lake View would certainly fit better.

Whilst I want Lake View to be ultra modern I still want it to have that lived in feel so I think I will move some furniture from Holly House into Lake View and also I will move a lot of other items over such as pictures, vases, mini mail, candles, etc.    The plants from Holly House can largely go into the Wee Witchy Cottage garden.

Maybe tomorrow I will feel differently but been thinking about this for a while.

Update on Witchy Cottage

I bought a lovely bookcase from Etsy that I thought would be perfect for the Wee Witchy Cottage - and I just love it :)

I also bought a small sheepskin rug and am undecided as to whether it will go in the Witchy Cottage or Holly House!

The cottage is obviously not finished but couldn't wait so just quickly popped some things on the bookcase and in front you will see lovely basket of mushrooms and one of the books that Christine sent me and I think they look perfect :)

Hubs on Crutches !!

My poor hubs had an accident at work on Tuesday morning (should have been his day off too).  He was taken to A & E in terrible pain.  Anyway he has ripped his calf muscle but his achilles tendon was okay – thank goodness!  His calf is so swollen – never seen anything like it.  He was given Codeine tablets and a pair of crutches.  He went back to work too and then got a lift home at 3.30 pm.  He was off Wednesday and Thursday and I put a day's leave in on Thursday but today he has gone back to work complete with crutches and painkillers - one of the reasons is he doesn't get paid when he is off ill even if it's an accident!!!   But he has been given a sit down job!! He's back at the Hospital on Monday

Lake View at last

Well I finally had some inspiration for Lake View - well two lots of inspiration!!!! I finally decided what I wanted to do with each room but this will be a slow process whilst I pay for each room :) !   Anyway whilst saving up the money I decided to 'dress the house' in Grand Designs style i.e. nowhere near completion and a  bit like a building site!!!  This isn't even quite finished yet :)   I grunged up ladders and the paste table and have added the alarm system being installed and instead of lights at the moment I just have wires coming through!

Mini gifts

I was so lucky to win a wonderful giveaway from Nataliegayleminiatures this week :)   Couldn't quite believe my luck.  My little parcel arrived on Thursday and they are just beautiful - two little boxes that open, a handbag (much needed) and a shabby chic coat rack (again much needed).  Once again thank you Natalie :) If you haven't seen Natalie's blog take a peek.

Hello to new followers

I'm really sorry but have been negligent in saying hello to new followers - so hello (I can't see blogs for some of you!)

    Sunday, 12 June 2011

When we went to York fair I purchased a brick mould from Malcolm's Miniatures to use on Wee Witchy Cottage.  I started it yesterday and today have painted it and put a wash on as per the instructions.  Quite pleased with how it's turned out - this is the first time I've done anything like this!  The photo shows the front of the cottage and the chimney and I had only just put the wash on when I photographed it.  Don't think putting it on a cream carpet to photograph was a good idea :) hubby's face was a picture!!   I think the bricks could have done with some more colour.

    Postman has been

Ooh the postman has just been with another little miniature suprise for me!!!   Needs a bit of work before I can show it - hopefully later today :)

    This n that!

Just thought I would do a quick update!! First of all my weight :(  I have put weight on this week that's because I have been on holiday and eating Danish pastries!!!  Why did I do that??  Because they were so yummy!  Also had a few meals out which were all delicious but this morning I am kicking myself for allowing myself to put the weight on.  Anyway I am back on Weightwatchers with a vengeance.

The good news though is I have finally got my shoes on !!!  Haven't been able to wear shoes apart from one old pair because of my broken toe.  The toe is still a bit red and swollen but it felt so good being able to wear shoes again and yesterday managed to get my trainers on too so now no excuses :)

     Giveaway news:

Pei Li is having a wonderful giveaway on her blog - a gorgeous hyacinth flower and a bread bin.  If you haven't seen her work or her blog - go and have a look now!!!
